Lunch and Learn: Getting Beyond Basic Requesting-Expanding Language Functions
DESCRIPTION: Have you ever worked with an AAC user who can only make requests? Does this user’s vocabulary consist only of nouns because those are the only words they have in their AAC system? This is a common trap that many communication partners fall into because it seems easiest to ask an AAC user to select between two objects. Basic requesting may be a good place to start when first introducing someone to communicating with AAC; however, we don’t want to get stuck there. Requesting is only one of many reasons people communicate. This one-hour implementation class reviews how people use language to communicate and what you can do to help individuals get beyond basic requesting and expand their language functions. Practical examples and materials will be used throughout the course.
